The very first week of the basement tapes, I promised to take you to a family who has to deal with the new smoking ban, which just came into affect this year. Now we’re here at the house of Ashley and Tracy Hatfield. We’re going to talk to them to see how they are dealing with this new law.

Ashley and Tracy have each been smoking for ten years. They’ve both tried to quit, but the habit is hard to break.

Tracy: Myself I’ve tried everything. The gum, the patch, the pill champix, chewing tobacco, any other means of nicotine.

Ashley: I tried the gum and quit for about twelve days, but you’re around it so much that you never get rid of that craving.

Their daughter Brya is four-years-old. She is young, but old enough to develop her own opinion on smoking.

Brya: It’s bad for you, and you can get flem.

Reporter: Why is it bad for you?

Brya: Cause when you smoke, it’s not very good.

Brya’s parents are aware of the dangers of second-hand smoke, but they are still having a hard time excepting this recent smoking ban.

Ashley: Are they going to enforce it like everything else. You walk down the street hand and hand with your kid, and have a cigarette, are they going to give you a fine for that? There’s more air in a car when you’re going faster, than puffing around your kid outside.

They are not the only parents questioning this new law. Sarah Carr has been smoking since she was 13 years-old. Since the ban came into affect, she still finds herself smoking in the car with her five-year-old daughter.

Sarah: I still smoke in the car with my daughter, I know it’s not a good thing, but I smoke in my house as well. The cops drive-by and they’re not really looking at ya, they aren’t paying attention, and it’s hard to see, really. It’s easier to see if someone’s not wearing a seatbelt or unless they exactly catch you putting out a smoke. But, she sits behind me in the car so how would they really know if there was a kid back there.

Even at a young age, her daughter Latoya disapproves of her actions.

Reporter: You have a mommy who smokes right?

Latoya: Nods head yes

Reporter: What do you think of that?

Latoya: Not good.

Reporter: Why isn’t it good?

Latoya: because sometimes it makes me cough.

So why are these parents having such a hard time adjusting?

Sarah Carr: You don’t think about it. It’s so natural and you just don’t think of the consequences I guess in the end. My parents smoked around me as a kid and I’m ok.

Reporter: So when smoking in a car with a child, do you think convenience is a factor? I know for me, it would just take more time to get out of the car, do you think that has a lot to do with why people do it?

Ashley and Tracy: Definitely, yeah.

For parents who smoke and question whether this law will be strongly enforced, rest assured it will be. Fredericton police say they will stop anyone they see smoking in a vehicle with a child under the age of 16.

Reporter: Do you think people should be smoking in the car with kids?

Brya: No

Reporter: How come?

Brya: Because the kid can get sick.

Reporter: Are you happy that the police made it bad for people to smoke in the car with their kids?

Brya: Yeah.

Reporter: So, you’re glad mommy is not allowed to smoke in the car with you anymore?

Brya: Yeah, I’m glad.

Reporter: Do you want mommy to quit smoking?

Brya: Yes.

This week I decided to take you on an adventure through the city of Fredericton to see how pedestrians here feel about the safety of the road.

A recent survey completed by the City of Fredericton says people are “less satisfied with traffic enforcement.” Since pedestrians are often the ones facing the ultimate dangers of the road, I am curious to find out their response to this survey.

“I’ve had people run through cross-walks when I was trying to cross, but i’ve had that happen in other cities too.”

“I’d be kind of bias if I actually made a comment because I lived in London, so the traffic here is pretty good compared to the traffic in London.”

To my surprise pedestrians at the busiest intersection in the city; Regent and Prospect, did not exactly agree with the results of the survey. But as I made my way to campus streets, I received a completely different response.

“I know I should’ve been stopped a few times, but I wasn’t. I do believe they should enforce, especially when it comes to pedestrians, cause I know I have a friend that constantly talks about how dangerous it is to walk downtown sometimes.”

Downtown was no different. Some agreed and some disagreed.

“I’m not a big fan of the police or nothing like that, but the police, I see them always pulling people over, and taking care of stuff like that, so I would say it’s got nothing to do with that.”

Fredericton police say they are doing what they can to make the streets safer for both drivers and pedestrians. They don’t deny this is an issue. They believe re-educating drivers is the only solution to this problem.

Hopefully drivers and pedestrians here in Fredericton can come to some sort of mutual understanding.

Families come from all around NB to enjoy a weekend of skating, sliding, and pond hockey fun. For some, including Roy Matheson it has been a family long tradition.

Being the oldest guy playing, Matheson had the experience of winning the championships in 2006, and faced off with the Prime Minister last year.

For the people of Miramichi, this event gets better every year. Volunteers come from everywhere to help out, prizes are given out to those who attend, and this year, the real memorial cup came for a visit.

This is an important event for families and friends, and even more for the community.

For the first time in 6 years, the community celebrated with fireworks. A perfect ending to a true Miramichi tradition.

Today is February 7, and it marks the end of a very important weekend here in Miramichi. It is officially the last day of the pond hockey tournament, and who ever takes home the championships gets there very own jerseys and their name on a very important trophy.
Hi my name is Brittany. I am a third year student at St. Thomas University, and I am studying to become a journalist. I am truly dedicated to writing for a cause, and I like to focus my stories on issues I feel, need the most public attention.

I believe the first step to adress an issue in a community or abroad, is to capture people’s attention to the subject matter, whether it be through writing or pictures. This at the least encourages people to think about what they are reading or seeing.

Finally, I am very excited to start my career, and move forward with my dreams of making this world a better place with my journalism skills.

For a smoker, there’s truly nothing better then lighting up in a nice warm vehicle, especially this time of year. The problem is, it is now illegal to smoke in the vehicle with your child. In fact, if you get caught the fine could be anywhere between 140 and 570 dollars.

But health experts say there is an even bigger problem. 13 to 20 children die every year due to respiratory illness’, which can directly be linked to second hand smoke.

For now, parents who smoke will have to light up before they enter their car, or consider quitting all together.

In the upcoming weeks, I will talk to a family who has to learn to adjust to this new law.
