Kylee French is a third year student at St. Thomas university. Her major in English with a concentration in drama keeps her schedule full. Last year, Kylee decided to give online dating a try and she thought plenty of fish was the right site for her. “You got over the awkwardness before you went on the date because you’d already talked, as opposed to just like meeting a guy in a bar. Then later on he takes you to dinner and you sit in silence for an hour and a half because you have nothing to talk about.” Plenty of fish dot com is a free online dating site that was started in 2001 by Mark Frind. According to his blog he started the site because he didn’t want to pay for online dating services. Some dating sites can cost anywhere from twenty to sixty dollars a month. For Kylee and most students this is an unrealistic amount to pay. That’s why she signed up on Plenty of Fish and Ok Cupid. Kylee hasn’t met anyone she really likes yet. But she still has her hook in the water. She is not the only person who has tried dating this way. “Online dating has become increasingly populat in Canada. Nationwide, online has increased by 15 per-cent between May 2009 and May 2010. But there are things to watch out for. The New York Post says 24 per-cent of men and 13 per-cent of women lie about their age. People also tend to lie about their height and salaries. For STU Journalism, I’m Jen Bishop.” |
