On March 20th the grounds of the Legislature were flooded with angry protesters. On March 24th the grounds were silent. Except for Doug Parr.
“They were going to sell our resources and if Quebec was going to make money off our resources then why can’t we?”
Parr was at the Legislature celebrating the death of the NB power deal.
“It is with much regret that I’m announcing this morning that we are no longer proceeding with the discussions to finalize the energy agreement with Hydro Quebec”
The abrupt death of the NB Power Deal was surprising to New Brunswickers.
“So it was cancelled?”
“I think it’s good that they’re keeping it in New Brunswick. But that’s really all I know.”
“I think that people have really been down on the deal but people should also keep in mind it’s an asset, it is a New Brunswick asset that’s not making any money.”
Political science professor Thomas Bateman thinks that energy prices will rise now that the deal is dead.
“It means that what we’ve seen in the past many years will continue until there’s some new policy change in the province. So it’s a status quo ante. And it will mean that probably rates will increase the next time NB Power reviews its costs. It means that NB Power will go further into debt.”
For STU Journalism I’m Crystal Cline.
